The Doctors Health Press, publisher of various natural health newsletters, books and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is supporting a study on the CPAP machine and its success rate in assisting people with sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a very common and quite significant health issue. One method of treating sleep apnea is “continuous positive airway pressure therapy” or CPAP. This treatment has a nearly 100% success rate. But this method of treatment has a brand-new, unintended effect—it could improve sexual function and satisfaction in men.

As reported in Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/men%E2%80%99s-health/a-surprising-benefit-of-using-a-cpap-machine), this health breakthrough comes out of Maryland, where the function and libido of 92 men with sleep apnea were assessed after they began CPAP therapy. Patients were assessed again after one, three and six months of CPAP therapy.

The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article, “A Surprising Benefit of Using a CPAP Machine” reports the study’s results showed that CPAP improved the sexual function and satisfaction in the majority of men regardless of their level of impotence. The study found “robust improvements” in this regard. While impotence is a common issue among sleep apnea patients, with nearly half experiencing it, researchers were surprised how prevalent impotence was among a relatively young sample of men with sleep apnea. (The average age in this study was 45.) They were also surprised at how significant a response these men had with CPAP therapy.

Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that occurs when the tissue in the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway, causing the body to stop breathing during sleep. It disrupts sleep and can increase the risk of other health problems, such as heart disease and stroke.

CPAP is the most common and effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. The steady flow of air from a CPAP machine keeps the airway open and restores normal oxygen levels during sleep. This helps maintain a steady, healthy level of breathing through the night.
