Local Dentist Offers Alternative for Sleep Apnea Treatment

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

Some may not be able to carry on a conversation or get through their day, because of lack of energy. Others may be exhausted all of the time. One could even be keeping loved ones up at night because of snoring. There are many Americans that suffer these symptoms and others including, sleeplessness or even breathlessness. All of these are signs that one can be suffering from sleep apnea.

What is sleep apnea? According to the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA), “sleep apnea is an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while somebody is asleep and it is estimated to affect over 22 million people”.

Dentists across the United States, such as Dr. Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD of Atlanta, GA, are working to help to bring relief to millions of Americans through the use of oral appliance therapy (OAT).

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form and occurs when breathing repeatedly stops and starts during a sleep cycle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “OSA increases the chances of a heart attack, stroke, type-2 diabetes, obesity, brain damage, and depression.”

Dr. Suway offers OAT through creating a custom fabricated mouth piece that is similar to a retainer. The mouth piece is custom fit and works by repositioning the jaw and pushing the tongue forward or by restraining the tongue to keep airways open.

OAT is an alternative to the continuous positive airway (CPAP) mask. CPAP is considered to be the ‘gold star’ of treating sleep apnea, but only when used consistently and properly. According to Dr. Suway, “most patients don’t like them and find a hard time tolerating them. OAT offers my patients a comfortable alternative and can potentially save their lives.”

Dr. Suway has been serving Marietta and Atlanta for over 30 years. In 1999 he was awarded a Mastership of Dentistry by the Academy of General Dentistry, a distinction held by fewer than 2,500 dentists in the United States. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Emory University School of Dentistry and his Bachelor’s Degree from Buknell University. In addition, he has been recognized as a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology and an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

Dr. Suway and his staff continue to educate themselves through ongoing training to stay on top of the latest technology. For more information or to schedule an appointment go to http://www.marietta-advanced-dentistry.com or call 770-953-1752.
