Healdsburg, CA (PRWEB) December 10, 2013

Healdsburg dentist, Will Brogdon, DDS, of Healdsburg Family and Implant Dentistry, has recently announced that he is now screening, treating and offering alternative therapies to the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, working in conjunction with local sleep physcians. Dr. Brogdon first became interested in sleep medicine because his wife brought to his attention his own excessive snoring. After undergoing a sleep screening and sleep study, he began using an oral appliance for therapy and the snoring quickly subsided.

“My interest in sleep medicine now stems from how many physiological systems are affected by chronic oxygen deprivation. If you suffer from sleep apnea with excessive snoring and it’s left untreated, it can lead to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, ED, and even memory loss,” Dr. Brogdon said. “Your health is at serious risk if these underlying conditions are not treated by a specialist.”

Many patients suffering from sleep apnea are prescribed a CPAP machine to open their airway while they sleep. During his sleep medicine training, however, Dr. Brogdon learned that the CPAP machine is challenging for many people and can be cumbersome, especially if the patient travels a lot for work or recreation.

“I’ve learned that many who suffer from sleep apnea have difficulty using a CPAP machine. For those suffering from mild to moderate sleep apnea, a sleep appliance may be all they need to keep their airway open and get a restful night’s sleep,” Dr. Brogdon said. “Dentists, in conjunction with sleep physicians, can provide these sleep appliances for conditions that affect roughly 50-70 percent of the population.”

Dr. Brogdon recently attended a sleep apnea course on October 30 that was hosted by Dr. Mark Abramson, director of the California Center for Craniomandibular Disorders, and Oasys, a sleep appliance laboratory. During the course, Dr. Brogdon learned how sleep apnea also affects children, specifically the development of their oral and nasal cavities, and several new methods for screening and testing for sleep apnea. He brought what he learned back to his Healdsburg dental practice and has since been offering sleep apnea therapy and treatment to patients in his community. In addition to sleep medicine, other services offered by Dr. Brogdon include:

Dental Implants

Cosmetic Dentistry

Family Dentistry
