Oregon Dentist Helps Patients Say Goodnight to Sleep Apnea

GLADSTONE, OR (PRWEB) November 06, 2012

Dentists have always helped patients with their mouth and gum issues. Now, a select number of dentists are also treating sleep issues. Dr. Bernard Bos D.D.S., of TenderCare Dental Center is one of a select number of dentists who are working to treat sleep apnea patients through oral appliance therapy. Dr. Bos offers oral appliance therapy through creating a mouthpiece similar to a retainer. The mouthpiece is custom fit and has little to no side effects.

“The benefits of oral appliance therapy allow a patient suffering from sleep apnea to improve their health by being able to enjoy the benefits of a good night’s sleep,” Bos said. “Through seeking treatment, you will not only feel rested, but also improve your general health and life expectancy.”

Research shows that those who suffer from untreated sleep apnea for a prolonged period of time increase their chances of being afflicted with hypertension, heart attack, stroke, headaches, acid reflux, weight gain, diabetes and, of course, snoring.

“Depending on which study is referenced, between 10 and 20 percent of the general population suffers from sleep apnea, often unknowingly. Approximately 10 percent of those with sleep apnea are diagnosed,” Bos said. “A substantial portion of our population is at risk for developing serious medical issues due to obstructive sleep apnea and is not even aware of it.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obstructive sleep apnea can increase the chances of a heart attack, stroke, type-2 diabetes, obesity, brain damage and depression.

Oral appliance therapy is an alternative treatment to the continuous positive airway pressure mask. “An oral appliance is an excellent, effective and well-tolerated alternative to the CPAP mask and improves apnea by 50 percent. It is much better than no treatment at all,” Bos said.

In addition to providing treatment through oral appliance therapy, Dr. Bos is currently offering obstructive sleep apnea screenings, including home sleep studies. He also provides sleep apnea patients with follow up care. For more information or to schedule a screening visit, http://www.tendercaredental.net/ or call (503) 656-1208.
