Rhinoplasty to Correct Sleep Apnea is Helping People Live Longer at The Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center in Houston

Studies have shown that sleep apnea sufferers have a 30 percent higher risk of heart attack or death than those unaffected. Traditional methods of treatment involve positive airway pressure typically by CPAP device but for some, having to use this method is too cumbersome or because of blockage of the sinus, is ineffective. Patients now are exploring ways to correct sleep apnea or improve the use of positive pressure and rhinoplasty for some is the solution.

Dr. Michael Eisemann of the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center is a triple board certified plastic surgeon in Houston specializing in rhinoplasty. “We are seeing a significant increase in patients seeking rhinoplasty, sometimes referred to as functional rhinoplasty, for correcting their sleep apnea or to help receive the full benefits of devices like CPAP.” Dr. Eisemann states that, “Rhinoplasty is only for about 20 percent of patients seeking to correct sleep apnea because the causes many times involve more than just correcting a nasal issue; with rhinoplasty we are able to correct deviated septum’s and other obstructions within the sinus. “

Rhinoplasty as with any surgery has typical risks associated with any surgery. Recovery for rhinoplasty usually requires seven to 10 days off from work with the usual healing being completed in six weeks. Insurance will not cover cosmetic rhinoplasty but typically will cover the expense associated with functional rhinoplasty; patients typically can call their carrier and discuss their coverage’s.
