Richmond Dentist Holds Sleep Apnea Awareness Event at Senior Center Targeting All Community Members

RICHMOND, VA (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

Dr. Joseph N. Tregaskes, D.M.D., M.S. and Dr. Douglas W. Puryear, M.D., will be holding a sleep apnea awareness event on Nov. 1, at the Holiday Inn Koger Conference Center, located at 10800 Midlothian Turnpike. The event is free to the public. Registration will begin at 6 p.m.

Dr. Tregaskes and Dr. Puryear will be speaking on the symptoms, health dangers and treatment options for sleep apnea. Incentive opportunities and prizes will be offered such as a free home sleep test (valued at $ 500) and an opportunity to win a free dental sleep appliance (valued over $ 2,000) to help engage Richmond area residents. Interviews with the press will be available following the event.

“Our goal is to spread awareness to the public on how dangerous snoring can actually be,” Dr. Tregaskes said. “In addition, we want to educate people on the dangers of sleep apnea and how deadly it is, when left untreated.”

Dr. Tregaskes is part of a select number of trained dentists who are now working with physicians across the country to treat sleep apnea, through oral appliance therapy. According to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, “Oral appliances are a front-line treatment for snoring for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. They may be used alone or in combination with other treatments for sleep-related breathing disorders, such as weight management, surgery or CPAP.”

An oral appliance is custom made and is similar to a retainer. The appliance helps to prevent the collapse of the tongue and tissues in the back of the throat. As a result, the airway is kept open during sleep and adequate air intake is supported. “When we don’t receive the right amount of oxygen our organs break down and this is where prolonged sleep apnea can cause many conditions, diseases and even death,” Dr. Puryear said.

Dr. Puryear will be speaking on how snoring can be the sign of something more serious. In addition to ruining your relationship, snoring can be the sign of a potentially deadly condition known as sleep apnea. Millions of sleep apnea sufferers go undiagnosed and untreated every year. Studies show that untreated sleep apnea can lead to cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart failure, stroke, and many other serious dangers.

“We are passionate about spreading sleep apnea awareness and educating our community about this serious sleep breathing disorder. We are also offering the chance to win a free dental sleep appliance and other great prizes,” Dr. Tregaskes said. “This is an event you won’t want to miss. It could save you or your partner’s life.”
