Riverside California Dentist Helps Combat Sleep Apnea

Riverside, CA (PRWEB) August 16, 2012

Dr. Anthony Kim, DDS, is helping patients’ general wellbeing through providing treatment for those who suffer from sleep apnea. “I feel good about improving the quality of life for my patients and know that I’m positively impacting their health,” Kim said.

Dr. Kim is one of the select dentists treating sleep apnea patients through oral appliance therapy (OAT). OAT is an alternative to the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, which is considered to be the ‘gold standard’ for sleep apnea patients. “We use OAT to help improve the overall wellness and health of our clients, beyond just teeth and gums,” Kim said.

Sleep apnea is linked to an increased risk of many health related issues such as heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and can even result in sudden death. Risks of depression, weight gain, and erectile dysfunction are also increased. Research has also determined that people with severe sleep apnea were 4.8 times more likely to die from cancer.

Dr. Kim offers OAT by creating a custom fabricated mouth piece that is similar to a retainer. The mouth piece repositions the jaw and pushes the tongue forward or restrains the tongue to keep the airway open. “Most clients tell me that they have so much more energy with oral appliance treatment. In fact, in many patients, their increased alertness and extra energy have motivated them to further improve their other health issues. I love seeing that.” Kim said.

The Mayo Clinic defines sleep apnea as “a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.” Sleep apnea exists in two forms – obstructed sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (which takes place in the brain). OSA is the most common form and is caused by a physical obstruction in the airway, triggering a person to stop breathing several times throughout the night. The amount of time can range from seconds to minutes.

Dr. Kim is a native Californian and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, in Irvine. He graduated from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in 2001. After graduation, Dr. Kim managed a busy clinic and then started his own private practice in Salinas, California. In 2008 he teamed with Dr. Shrader who founded one of the premiere cosmetic and restorative practices in the inland empire. Dr. Kim attends several local study groups which meet on a regular basis to keep abreast of the newest concepts and techniques in restorative, cosmetic and implant dentistry.

Dr. Kim is a fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, an associate fellow of the World Clinical Laser Institute, an associate fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and is currently finalizing his fellowship of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Kim is also a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and he attends Vantage Point Church in Corona.
