Six Sleep Apnea Sufferers CPAP May Not Help

Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) November 12, 2013

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) should not be ignored. Given the numerous health complications it can create (high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, sudden death and more), it’s imperative that those who believe they have OSA first get a diagnosis and obtain treatment and, then most importantly, adhere to their prescribed CPAP treatment plan.

The first order of medical treatment is requiring CPAP therapy that many people look to upon initial diagnosis. All too frequently, this initial trial of CPAP therapy results in either the eventual discontinuation or serious under-use in the first 6-12 months by the individual. Either way, the patient will rapidly return (within 24-48 hours) to the same level of increased risk for a heart attack, stroke, sudden death and chronic fatigue as if he or she had never been diagnosed with OSA in the first place.

That’s why Dr. Stephen D. Ochs, Chief Medical Director, at the Sleep Apnea Surgicure Center in Denver wants to set the record straight about both CPAP and its surgical alternative.

“Sleep apnea is a condition that cuts across all demographics and cultures,” said Dr. Ochs, “but CPAP is not. There are many circumstances in which CPAP simply isn’t going to be the most beneficial option for Obstructive Sleep Apnea sufferers. That’s why we urge those individuals unwilling or unable to use CPAP to explore their options by contacting us. Our outpatient MMA surgery, the Get2REM operation, we have proven both safe and effective in treating, and in most cases, curing OSA thereby totally eliminating the need for CPAP therapy.”

With that in mind, persons who fall into any of the following categories should look into the possibility of Get2REM which advances the jaw forward slightly and thereby opens up the upper airway.

1. Truckers- The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is in the midst of coming up with rules applying to OSA testing for members of the trucking industry, but while the thought is that CPAP will be the first line of defense against exhaustion among such drivers, challenges do exist. Because truckers may sleep in their own bed one night, a motel room the next, and their own cabin after that, the annoyance of lugging around CPAP equipment and setting it up properly renders CPAP ineffective for many people.

2. Persons with Allergies, Sensitive Skin- There are some whose skin becomes splotchy or itchy when they wear a CPAP mask, either because they’re allergic to some substance in the equipment or because they simply have sensitive skin. When an allergic reaction occurs, sleep can prove to be more elusive than it was before.

3. Teenagers- The reason CPAP is often not feasible for late teens is the fact that they’re growing at a rapid pace. A CPAP mask will need to be refitted on a regular basis or else the therapy will fail to achieve success. OSA is frequently associated in this age group with significant dental malocclusion requiring pre-operative orthodontic treatment.

4. Outdoor Enthusiasts- It’s one thing to hook up a CPAP machine in the comfort of one’s home but quite another to lug it along on a camping, rafting, or climbing trip. For persons who know they’re going to be out in the elements at regular intervals, CPAP doesn’t make sense, as one missed day is all it takes to set a person back.

5. People Experiencing Weight Fluctuations- Persons who lose or gain weight may fail to benefit from CPAP due to slight alterations to their face that can cause a mask to fit poorly. Under use of CPAP on a nightly basis (at least 4 hours each night of CPAP use every night is the minimum for effective OSA treatment) can restart the positive feedback loop of chronic fatigue followed by overeating trying to stay alert leading to more weight gain and eventual obesity.

6. Those business executives who must travel most work weeks by plane who simply find it incredibly burdensome to pack or carry on-board their CPAP machine, hoses and mask each and every time but who are all too aware of the increased health risk to them of under- use of their CPAP.

“For these types of persons and the countless others who we didn’t have the space to mention, the difficulties inherent with CPAP can be eliminated with Get2REM,” said Dr. Ochs. “If CPAP isn’t working for you, speak with your sleep doctor about the possibility of a Maxillomandibular Advancement Surgery or contact us directly. I would encourage you to review our website for a wealth of information on obstructive sleep apnea and the specialty surgical operation we provide for our carefully selected patients.”

Sleep Apnea Surgicure is a physician-owned healthcare enterprise headquartered in Denver whose mission is to increase awareness among the general public about both the health risks of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and the potential surgical cure that the Get2REM MMA procedure can offer. Dr. Ochs and Dr. Robinson are well-versed in the intricacies of sleep disorders and the various ways in which patients might seek effective treatment. Persons tired of suffering through sleep apnea are encouraged to learn more about the treatment options available to them at their website.
