Heart attack, stroke, cancer, depression, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and vehicular and work place accidents are all related to snoring. Snoring Isn’t Sexy announces the launch of the Stop the Snoring, Save the World web site and campaign to increase public awareness of the dangers of snoring and sleep apnea.

Snoring can be a sign of a serious medical condition known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing can stop hundreds of times throughout the night. These episodes can last seconds to minutes without the sufferer being aware of them and are caused by collapse of the airway in the back of the throat.

Treatment of OSA can be accomplished with a medical device known as CPAP in which pressurized air is blown through a tube into the nose or mouth to prevent collapse of the airway. In mild and moderate sleep apnea or when the patient cannot tolerate the CPAP or when he/she prefers it, a specially-educated dentist can construct a dental appliance which holds the lower jaw forward to stabilize the airway in the throat. Other approaches to treatment include surgery, palate stiffeners and nasal valves.

The intent of the Stop the Snoring, Save the World campaign and web site is to increase the public’s awareness of snoring as a precursor to the dangerous medical problem known as obstructive sleep apnea.

As part of the campaign, the public is invited to tell their stories of snoring and sleep apnea on the web at Stop the Snoring, Save the World and to encourage others to do the same. Stories can be read at the site’s “Read the Stories” menu link.

Physicians and dentists are being asked to support these efforts by registering at the professional page. The listing of all participating professionals can be found at the http://sts-stw.net/find-doctor.cfm. There is no fee to the physician or dentist to be listed.

The campaign is seeking support from health and sleep related organizations and commercial entities. Organizations and commercial businesses that wish to support the campaign may do so online.

“Snoring has been considered a joke for so long it is difficult to overcome that perception,” said Laurence I. Barsh, DMD, Founder of Snoring Isn’t Sexy. “But since snoring can be a precursor to serious medical problems as well as a factor in marital and relationship discord, we felt that a campaign to increase public awareness to the dangers of snoring was appropriate and necessary.”
