Tony Dorsett holds an NFL record that can only be tied, the 99 yard touchdown run from scrimmage against the Vikings in 1982. He is considered to be one of the greatest Cowboys to have ever played. Dorsett recently joined the national “Tackle Sleep Apnea Campaign,” in efforts to spread awareness to his community on the symptoms, dangers and alternative treatment options available for sleep apnea. The event is sponsored by Dental Sleep Medicine experts, Sleep Group Solutions and Gergen’s Orthodontic Laboratory, happening November 1 in Dallas at the North Texas Automotive Museum.

The event begins promptly at 7pm, at the North Texas Automotive Museum, located at 677 W. Campbell Rd. Pre-registration is recommended, as the event is free to the public. Dorsett will be in attendance and will be speaking on his experience with sleep apnea. In addition, he will be available for in-studio interviews tomorrow and Thursday. Dorsett and everyone involved with the campaign will be available for one on one interviews with the press, following the event. “I want to let people know how important it is to get treatment and how getting treatment can not only effect your health, but it can save your life,” Dorsett said.

Dorsett joined the campaign through contacting David Gergen, President of Gergen’s Orthodontic Labratory and The Pro Player Health Alliance. Gergen then put Dorsett in contact with Dr. Harry L. Sugg, D.D.S. and Dr. Fred Massey M.D., due to his concern of having sleep apnea. After testing he was diagnosed with sleep apnea and is currently receiving treatment, through the use of an oral appliance. He currently is using a Herbst device, the only FDA Medicare approved sleep appliance. This device is currently used by a select number of dentists to treat moderate to severe sleep apnea and it is also used for those who are CPAP intolerant. The Herbst device is one of the treatment alternatives that will be discussed during the event on Thursday. “I want to spread awareness about this treatment option,” Dorsett said. “Not many people are aware that dentists can help those who are suffering and/or can’t tolerate any other form of treatment.”

In addition to Dorsett, other former NFL legends, The Dallas Chapter NFL Players Association, the Living Heart Foundation, The American Legion and local fire and police stations will be taking part in the event. As part of each event, there are experts and a local dentist on hand that will be discussing the symptoms, health dangers and alternative treatment options for sleep apnea. In addition, several former NFL legends share their experience with sleep apnea. Dr. Harry L Sugg, D.D.S. will be touching on how dentists are now part of the treatment process for sleep apnea. Dr. Sugg created the Hearst appliance that Dorsett currently uses to treat his apnea.

The campaign had its official launch in Dallas and has made stops in Minneapolis, Seattle and Tacoma.“We are back in Dallas because the first event was very successful and had a tremendous impact on a lot of people,”Gergen said. “The American Legion has also teamed up to be part of the campaign, helping to make each event, more successful than ever.” Other upcoming events will be taking place in Phoenix and Boston.
