Woodland Hills Dental Implant Center Doctors Can Solve Sleep Problems

Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad are prosthodondists who have each served as chairman of the Restorative Department at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.

Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) April 09, 2014

National news outlets including CNN, USA Today, the New York Times, CBS, and Fox News, featured a recent study reporting that sleep apnea causes lowered oxygenation levels creating an environment where cancer cells can thrive.

Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Woodland Hills and Oxnard, Calif., want to use National Prosthodontics Awareness Week (April 6-12) to alert the public that surgery and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) are not the only two ways to combat sleep apnea.

“As a prosthodontist, which is a specialized dentist who treats patients’ oral health issues including sleep apnea, I noticed that medical doctors interviewed recommended surgery and CPAP as the two main ways to combat sleep apnea without mentioning a common, non-surgical solution that prosthodontists use to treat the condition,” Dr. Jivraj said. “CPAP is still considered the ‘gold standard’ treatment by many physicians, but with reported compliance rates lower than 50 percent, patients must be educated about the proven, alternative therapies.”

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines recommend that patients with mild or moderate sleep apnea should be given a choice between being prescribed a CPAP machine or an oral appliance (also called an oral device.) It’s important to remind patients of all sleep apnea treatment options, including this common, non-surgical solution that prosthodontists use today called Oral Appliance Therapy, which involves a custom-made sleep apnea device like a mouth guard.

“Prosthodontists have advanced dental training specifically for oral health conditions, including sleep apnea, and specialize in fitting and finding the correct position to treat mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea without surgery or CPAP,” Dr. Reshad said.

Prosthodontists also can provide a solution for those with severe sleep apnea patients who can’t tolerate wearing a CPAP mask to bed every night. With sleep apnea concerns growing, increased awareness about treatment option choice is critical, Reshad said.

Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are part of the only 2 percent of dentists in the world who can call themselves prosthodontists.

A prosthodontist is a dentist who:

● specializes in the aesthetic dentistry and restoration and replacement of teeth

● receives two to three years of additional training post-dental school

● restores optimum appearance and function to a patient’s smile

Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad each completed three years of Advanced Prosthodontic training at the University of Southern California. These “smile makers” perform implant and cosmetic dental treatment beyond the means of most general dentists. They have the extra training and 20 years’ experience to diagnose and treat underlying problems as part of an overall dental treatment program

Dr. Jivraj, an award-winning prosthodontist specializing in implant, cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry, is an international lecturer and has written more than two dozen articles on implant dentistry and restorative dentistry for the British Dental Association. He also is a former chairman of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry’s Fixed Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry section.

Dr. Reshad also is a former chairman of University of Southern California School of Dentistry’s Fixed Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry section. He is an internationally known expert in cosmetic dentistry, as is Dr. Jivraj. Dr. Reshad is on the editorial board of the prestigious Journal of Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry and is an honorary clinical teacher at the Eastman Dental Institute.
